The sunny side

That’s what I’m looking for! It’ll match my sunny disposition. A rather short post this week due to attending the Canmore Beer Festival. Rest assured, I did my very best to research the current state of craft beer in Western Canada. I’m happy to report it is in great shape, unlike me the following day. We didn’t quite get around to a planned hike. Maybe this coming weekend? Right, back to the sunny side.IMG_20170514_140620

We live in the Calgary neighbourhood of Sunnyside, and this spring it hasn’t been all that sunny – so far. As I write this, I can hear the cars below splashing through deep puddles left after all the rain today. The Rainyside. Spring rain is a good thing, but not when the temperatures barely climb above freezing. The Shiveryside…

Old truck and spring greens

Yes, Old PlaidCamper is complaining about spring going missing. The students I teach like to say I live on the Grumpyside. They might have a point.IMG_20170514_142201

Determined to prove myself wrong (and needing to blow away a few “cobwebs” gathered at the Canmore Beer Festival the previous day) I took a gentle walk through our neighbourhood. Armed with my camera phone and a slight headache, I was intent on finding spring.IMG_20170514_141951

Blossom and old trucks made for a pretty good haul. So the pavements were wet, and skies were grey, but on the whole, I think spring is here.

It’s not as old as it looks (is it?)

The two old trucks cheered me up, although when a truck manufactured after you were born is deemed old, it can get you down. ImageOh dear, I really have to work harder at getting back my sunny disposition. After all, I do live on the Sunnyside.IMG_20170515_064023

Good news for a grumpy PlaidCamper – the long range forecast is promising brighter days! Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a warm and sunny weekend!

The tasting glass was tiny. I simply don’t understand how I had a slight headache…

I am a would be outdoorsman - that is if I had more time, skills and knowledge. When I can, I love being outdoors, just camping, hiking, snowboarding, xc skiing, snowshoeing, paddling a canoe or trying something new. What I lack in ability, I make up for in enthusiasm and having a go. I'd never really survive for long out there in the wild, but I enjoy pretending I could if I had to...

  1. Fun walking through the neighborhood with you, pc; enjoyed the wavering from the sunnyside to the shiveryside and back again. Really like those blossom photos, and your writing, of course. I hope your weekend is filled with warmth and sweetness~~

    1. Thanks, Jet, and I’m glad you enjoyed this sunny(ish) tour. We’ve just got back from our weekend in Yoho, where it was unseasonably warm and sunny, and so beautiful. Might have a bear story for next week…
I hope your week is off to a fine start!

    1. Thanks, Margaret! Yup, spring and old trucks make a fine combination. If I was more mechanically minded, I’d love to potter around the prairies in an old heap – warm days only!
I hope your week is off to a good start!

  2. Craft beers and the spirit of spring bring out the sunny side of life, for sure! I enjoyed this little tour of the neighborhood, PC, and am glad that a little headache didn’t damper the enthusiasm.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the little tour here, Walt. Fortunately, my scribbled notes from the beer festival were legible after the event, and we picked up a bottle or two of particular favourites to enjoy – in moderation! – this past weekend out at a cabin. As you say, craft beer and spring…
      Enjoy your week!

    1. It was a lovely long weekend here, with high temperatures and bright sunshine – I hope you had the same! It was warm enough to sit outside a friend’s cabin and drink a glass of beer and enjoy a mountain view. A May long weekend and no snow!
      Have a great week!

  4. Sounds like you had a great time in Canmore, despite the cloudiness the next day. You actually live in the same neighbourhood as my brother does. It’s such a beautiful part of the city.

    1. Thanks, Douglas! Yeah, Canmore is an easy place to enjoy most times. Throw in a beer festival, and there’s an easy day!
We like living in Sunnyside – in spring and summer it’s a leafy neighbourhood and there’s a pleasant and lively feel.
I hope your week is off to a good start!

  5. The craft beer business is booming in Michigan and luckily I can usually find a new hard cider to try when we check out the latest addition to the scene. Enjoyed the tour through Sunnyside and your photos!

  6. I can’t resist trying a new beer or two…
Of course, since posting and complaining about no spring last week, Calgary and most of southern Alberta has skipped spring and we are into summer temperatures! Not complaining, the mountains were wonderful this past weekend, and Sunnyside is living up to the name.
I hope your week is off to a good start!
