Canada!

Canada celebrates 150 years of Confederation tomorrow – the sesquicentennial!DSCF4923We’ll be on the road, passing through small towns and stopping for cups of coffee and smiles as each place celebrates Canada. It’ll be all Canadian artists on the radio and the mix tape – but no Nickelback (sorry!) – and we’ll be wearing red and white.DSCF2514We feel incredibly fortunate to live in this fine land. As relatively recent immigrants, and freshly minted Canadians, every day is Canada day…a bit much I know, but we love it here. So please pardon the patriotism, and I hope you enjoy the selected photographs.DSCF4141If you are Canadian, would like to be Canadian, know some Canadians, or find yourself a little bit Canadian at heart, then happy Canada Day to you, and have a wonderful time marking the 150 this weekend! (And yes, we’re having road trip Timbits for breakfast – yum!)IMG_20170312_174544

I am a would be outdoorsman - that is if I had more time, skills and knowledge. When I can, I love being outdoors, just camping, hiking, snowboarding, xc skiing, snowshoeing, paddling a canoe or trying something new. What I lack in ability, I make up for in enthusiasm and having a go. I'd never really survive for long out there in the wild, but I enjoy pretending I could if I had to...

  1. Happy O Canada Day with patriotism pardoned and with holiday images as beautiful as those here pictured as you hit the road with excellent music and experience the wonderful country. Cheers from your envious neighbors down south!

    1. Walt, we appreciate the good wishes! I have to say we are a little envious of your Rocky Mountain road trip from New Mexico up to Montana. (This is the first summer in a few years where we won’t be heading to the beautiful state of Montana, and I’m missing it already. Comforted by the hope you’ll write about your big sky adventures…)
Have a great weekend and upcoming Fourth of July!

    1. Yes, isn’t it wonderful to have unlimited and free access to national parks?! Are you up in the True North just now? (I’d cheerfully pay more in taxes to maintain that free status, but now I sound like a dangerously left-leaning Canadian, haha!)
Have a great weekend, wherever you find yourself!

      1. We spent five days in Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park (which will pop up in our posts soon). Glorious! Yes, we too would pay more in taxes for expanding national parks, maintaining them, and then allowing everyone in free. (Does that mean we more left-leaning than you?)

  2. Yes! I am a Canadian at heart and after the recent crap going on…..move on over, here I come! lol kidding aside, 150 years is going to be a great celebration and I will keep my neighbor (wished I was Canadian) close to my heart tomorrow. 🙂 Where are you originally from? I don’t think that I ever heard your story, guide me to it to save typing it if need be. Cheers!

    1. Loved your comment, Margaret, made me smile! There’s plenty of room up here for you should the need arise, and bighearted and creative people like yourself fit right in…
I haven’t really shared my story on OldPlaidCamper in one post, but here it is (briefly!):
Born in London, UK, lived all over, worked mainly in education, moving from city, to town, to village, to hamlet, and then moved to France for a few years and worked as a chef. Then moved to Canada 10 years ago, and have felt right at home ever since. Love Calgary and the access to the mountains and prairies, but city life – great though Calgary is – doesn’t appeal day to day, so a change will be coming at some point, but staying in Western Canada for sure!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the upcoming July 4th celebrations!

      1. Oh so very fun hearing about your travels and how you ended up in Canada. Thank you for that. Here is mine….born in US, embarrassed by US, contemplating leaving US, lol just kidding, I probably would miss my daughters and grandchildren. But….hopefully visit Canada before I die. I am a drama queen, I know 🙂 enjoy your celebration and weekend!

  3. i am wondering if I have the nerve to wear my shirt that says there will be a meeting in 2020 for indigenous peoples to celebrate 15000 years. I like to raise the point but don’t want to create negativity.

    1. It is a more than fair point to raise, and one many Canadians of all stripes are thinking about as they choose to celebrate (or not) 150 years since Confederation. Reconciliation of a terrible past is a tough path to navigate, especially if your nation has been subjected to brutality.
Thanks, Jane, for making the point you do, and have a wonderful weekend, however it is spent!

  4. There have been times in the past, on international travels, when I have answered to the question, “where are your from?” with the answer: “Canada.” Like when I ended up on a bus-load of protesters going to an anti-U.S. protest in Amsterdam. ha. So I consider myself part-Canadian, I revel in the beauty of your country and its people. Wishing you a happy and patriotic and proud celebration, pc.

    1. I liked your bus story – thanks, Jet! We’re very happy to be living, working and exploring in North America, always proud to be a Canadian, and next Canada Day we might borrow your cupcake decorating idea!
      Enjoy your long weekend!

  7. Enjoy your celebration of all things Canadian and I laughed at the exclusion of Nickelback and hope Rush made it on to the mix tape. Wonderful photos and you have an incredibly beautiful country to celebrate! Have a wonderful trip!

    1. Thank you for your good wishes! We are somewhere on the Trans-Canada, heading west and enjoying the day. We’ve had lots of Canadian music playing, but sadly, no Rush. I’m a fan, but Mrs. PC, not so much!
I hope your weekend is going well!
