Rushing out, rushing in

My goodness, time appears to be flying by – and as we are all busy, I’ll keep it brief this week! Having said that, let’s slow down a little…

Farewell 2017

Can you hear it? Is that the sound of the year rushing to a close? The sun setting on 2017? If your watch is digital, and your clock doesn’t tick, does time have a sound? We’re at that point with the turn of the year when many like to look back and peer forward, a combination of reflection and anticipation. Tick and tock.

Clockwork and mechanical noises aside, how about enjoying the passage of time and measuring it differently – perhaps in the tides rising and falling on a beach? Forget about seconds and minutes, and human precision. Slow down a bit, and feel the flow of water to experience time passing. Time as a current, and as currency – it’ll pass and can be spent in different ways. I look forward to finding some time and space in a thawing lake, in the flow of a spring river, a light summer rain shower, those autumnal fog banks rolling in, or in a winter snowstorm or coastal downpour. The anticipation of time being well spent…

Rushing in

Why all the water this week? We’re at the coast, and water is never far from where you are on the Ucluelet peninsula. Inlet or ocean, puddles and streams, rain or fog, we’ve experienced them all this week, and it is a water world for sure. We’ve also enjoyed some bright days too, striding along Long Beach, keeping warm with a brisk pace in temperatures nosing just a touch above freezing. There’s beauty out here in any weather!

  2. I like your concept of time passage, PC, and I, too, find the tides and flow of water a relaxing and peaceful activity. I am glad to hear you and Mrs. PC are enjoying the coast and the world of water, and I send my Happy New Year wishes to both of you. Lovely post.

  3. Happy New Year! Having spent many weeks rafting northern rivers, I too have contemplated how water can represent the passage of time. Enjoy the flowing water. Nothing is flowing in Edmonton–it’s -30.

  5. A very appropriate way to spend the new year…listing, feeling and breathing in the flow of water in and out, up and down…now that is time well spent. Wishing you a very happy new year and may 2018 be filled with being able to spend time as you choose to spend it.

  7. Beautiful Farewell 2017 image and wonderful writing, especially the thoughts surrounding “time as a current, and as a currency.” All of the lakes around here are covered with ice and it was nice to see waves again. Enjoy your weekend on the coast and Happy New Year!

    1. Thank you! Snapped that particular photograph just as we were leaving the beach – I’d stopped to recover my balance after clambering over some frosty logs and glanced back and thought “I’d better snap that!” If i hadn’t been slipping, might never have looked back…

  8. That first shot took my breath away-very pretty shot and so peaceful, although I am wondering if it is cold. I am guessing yes, with the frost-tipped close-ups. Nice job on your captures. i wish you a joy-filled new year. It is nice to stop and take time to peruse the blogs while I am on break. All the best to you and Mrs. Plaid Camper.

    1. Thanks, Jane, and a very Happy New Year to you! I hope the studies are going well, and I hope Alberta warms up a little before we head back – from no winter to a real blast of cold. I guess that’s a bit more normal in Edmonton? No chinooks?
