A short post to go with the short days. I know the days aren’t shorter in hours and minutes, but the decreasing daylight is a disappointment this time of year. You’d think, after all these decades, I’d have come to an accommodation with less light by now…
What we have enjoyed is being out and about as the sun starts to set early afternoon. Oh alright, I’m exaggerating – not early afternoon, more like late afternoon. Given the fairly sunny spells we’ve mostly had the past few weeks, there have been some very colourful sunsets and I’ve included a few shots here. We’ve been fortunate to be on beaches and tramping trails in glorious weather, huffing and puffing to keep up with an enthusiastic canine hiker. Or is that jogger?
Since last weekend it has been rather rainy in this little corner of the PNW – as it should be – and the wind got up quite a bit yesterday, so it is looking like too much of a risk this coming weekend to take a youth group out in boats to their remote camping spot. Like the young ones, I’m disappointed not to be camping, but also like the young ones, not entirely disappointed to be avoiding camping in what looks like a weekend of prolonged rainfall. Instead, we will be crabbing in a sheltered bay, and trail building more locally – plenty of outdoor time and, thankfully, no chance of swell-induced Salish seasickness.
Any suitable crustaceans will be distributed to elders in the community, and if firewood needs chopping and stacking, then the youngsters will get to that as well. It’s a delight to see them connected, community-minded and caring.
If you celebrate US Thanksgiving, I hope it’s been a happy holiday and continues to be so into the weekend. Thanks for reading, it’s always appreciated!

Thanks for sharing the absolutely beautiful week of sunsets! After Ohio State put an end to Michigan’s playoff hopes with a crushing 62-39 defeat, I needed some peaceful vibes to get me ready for Notre Dame’s game tonight. I should have been watching Kane score again today in their win against Chelsea instead of the Michigan game. I love the shot of Scout setting the pace in that beautiful sunset and Thursday’s shot is fantastic. The days seem really short here with our very gray days, but we did see some blue skies this week. I hope the latest adventure with the community was a success and enjoy the weekend and the pale ale!

Thank you! Not so many colourful sunsets in the next little while – rather wet and windy – our outdoor time was restricted to some dock fishing, and then back inside for lots of gym football. Very entertaining, especially as I revert to rugby when I play football. Confusing for all…
I believe Notre Dame won, so you still have a team in play?! Good win for Spurs yesterday (and Everton, up to sixth, above MUFC, haha, not that the season will end that way!)
Watching the CFL Grey Cup, and after the first quarter I’m happy to see Calgary has a lead…

Thanks, Walt! We’re making the most of shorter days as we can, and we’re entering a very rainy couple of weeks, so it’s good to have seen those colourful sunsets. I think it might be pale ale and winter beer season now…

The raw material is all there in the young ones, and all we do as oldsters is give a little nudge, offer some reassurance about having a go at life without getting too concerned about a stumble or two, and off they go! Sounds easy when put like that…

The gray skies and non-stop rain, coupled with shorter days are conspiring to cast my mood afoul. At least you have the ocean to buffer some of the seasonal blahs, eh? As soon as we get some appreciable snow, I’ll strap on my skis – then all will be fine!

Fingers crossed you get decent snowfall and then sunny skies for some xc skiing – my favourite Alberta weather was -10C, sunshine and no breeze, about perfect for snowshoes or skis.
