…I was going to write some more about Brexit, straight from the horse’s mouth, as it were, based on our recent trip. However, I simply don’t have the energy or enthusiasm for it, mostly because I’ve been silly enough to keep following events (non-events?) since returning home. I cannot believe, at this late hour, politicians – remain or leave – are unable to pony up on this – and we’re already past one “not to be missed” deadline! So instead, I’ll write a bit about our Cornish adventures, and include a picture of a pony…
Whenever we visit Ma PlaidCamper down in Cornwall, we find some time to tramp the trails on the Cornish coastal path, and it is always a treat! Rain or shine – and we were lucky to have almost shine – this path is one to savour. We enjoyed a day that more than hinted at spring. Wildflowers were mere minutes from appearing (I’m betting some bloomed the next day!), rabbits were bounding and bouncing, birds were singing, one or two bumblebees buzzed and hummed in and out of the hedgerows, and Shetland ponies were happily grazing along the cliff tops. All this in the first few minutes! Spring! Boing!
Often, the cliff tops are wind blasted, and that, combined with copious mud underfoot can make things challenging. This time out, a relatively lengthy dry spell just before our visit, and an almost windless day meant we had benign conditions. With the sun making an occasional appearance through the mist and haze, we found the walking very pleasant, long stretches along the tops punctuated by steep and short up and downs between coves. Fully loaded with snacks and a light lunch, and a brief-that-turned-long stop at a cafe for coffee, our day on the path was about as good as it can be.
This isn’t a path to be rushed, and why would you with varied views to take in as you round headland after headland? The springy turf invites you to stop and sit, so we did, time after time. Our light lunch became a long lunch, and the timing was just right as the sun shone for a lengthy spell, burning off misty remnants and turning the grey waters blue.
We couldn’t spend the entire day on the path, as we had plans to meet up with friends and family at a local pub, and a pint or two of Tribute pale ale to test – it passed, with flying colours.
Parents with small dogs was a bit of a theme this trip. Blue lives with my dad, and Bertie lives with mum. Bertie is the most energetic dog in the world, and luckily for him, he is hilarious with it. He reminded me of an extra from a Wallace and Gromit movie…
The noise and nonsense of Brexit aside, we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Family, friends, lovely scenery, silly (not really) dogs, beer, and the hugely necessary British sense of humour (how else can a nation survive the Brexit debacle?) all added up to a great time.

Beautiful Adam! Ah yes, the legendary British humour (see that? I’m going native!). I wonder what my favorites Python would have to say about Brexit. One of my triumphs as a parent is teaching my daughter to appreciate the genius of Monty Python. Holy Grail – Funniest. Movie. Ever.

I really enjoyed your post, I can see myself painting and exploring the countryside. My go to for info on Brexit is listening to Katty Kay on Morning Joe. I can’t even imagine the mess, not sure if our mess is worse or not. Great photos by the way! Cheers and have a fantastic weekend!

The Brexit fiasco is somewhat entertaining in a way, as long as you don’t have to live through the consequences. yikes. It’s still more civilized than anything Trump-related. oops, I don’t do politics in the blogosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed this brisk and stunning visit to Cornwall, Pc. Funny segue from British to pony to Cornwall, gave me a chuckle to see this magnificent Shetland pony grazing on the cliffside. As usual, thoroughly enjoyed your narrative, laughed and smiled (at the pony byline), and appreciate the fantastic vistas and photos. This jaunt to Cornwall made my day.

You do such a great job on your blog regarding keeping politics out of it, and keeping your commentary positive and upbeat as much as your stories and circumstances allow. As for the two fiascos, all one can hope is that they each run their course, and something approaching “civilized” emerges from the wreckage…

Loved the spectacular photos and thank you for sharing the charming Bertie and your beautiful walk along the Cornish coastal path! Wonderful descriptions of the walk and I keep waiting for some flowers to appear here and would love to add a pony to the backyard gang! I thought of an article in the New York Times when reading your comments about Brexit, “Britons United By Lost Hope, If Nothing Else” and there are more and more days now when I can barely make it through a news program. Sounds like it was an absolutely wonderful trip and hope you had a great weekend!

Thank you! Beer and Bertie did much to cheer us up in the face of Brexit stupidity. Bertie is about 8 months, and leads my mum a merry dance – probably rather similar to how Harper is making an impact?!

Just back from a weekend conference as I read this and loving the beautiful seascapes. there is nothing cuter than a Shetland pony even if they can be quite naughty, but good teachers, too. Glad you had a great visit.

The Shetlands are cute, and I didn’t know they had a reputation for being naughty! At one point, my dad had quite the collection of Shetlands up on his hill farm (more than 20!) but I never spent too much time with them. When she was young, our daughter loved to see them.

Lovely photos. I loved Cornwall when I visited from Australia in 2016. The cliffs and little coves, not to mention fishing villages are gorgeous.

Thanks, Miriam! Yes, Bertie is a character – my mum has been surprised by how much energy he has, even for a young pup, but he gets away with all his antics because he’s so funny. I guess he’ll slow down as he gets older, but it’s hard to imagine. I get tired just thinking about him…
