Scout and I have been doing our best to enjoy early morning walks. We live and wander in a very green and pleasant place, a rainforest skirting the edge of the ocean. So the trying isn’t so bad, let’s be clear about that. It’s less the place, more the time of year. I’m not a huge fan of November.

Sparse

When we lived in Calgary, November was a month of promise but little delivery. There was (in my head) always the hope of decent snow, and sometimes the higher runs in the mountains delivered earlier in the month, but often not. In town, leaves had dropped long ago – mid to late September, and without snow, it always looked a touch drab. Less so here, due to the previously mentioned rainforest, full of evergreens, but the last of the deciduous leaves are dropping, and bare patches are apparent.

Again, not so bad, but combined with the (admittedly long overdue) fall rains, shorter daylight hours and grey skies, it all feels a bit dreary. November blahs! Having been spoiled by the warmer late summer and fall, it seems a tougher adjustment to the grey and damp this year. Like male pattern baldness, hardly a major concern, but it’s there! I guess I’ll pull on the wooly toques, and get acquainted or reacquainted with the coastal winter. Might need a trip or two up island, get into the mountains there and wallow in the snow…

A sparse post this week on a thin topic, those early winter blues. Or greys. To finish on a more positive note – November is almost over!

Unlike male pattern baldness (I am not exempt) the sparseness of November holds the promise of a full return of “hair”– the winter snows, your coastal sunlight, and a thickening of glorious vegetation in the spring. Well, our aging process might prevent a feeling of perfection in our place, wherever that might be, but here your words & photos help us see beyond the thinness of our season… thanks for that!

    1. Thanks, Walt! You’re a little better at seeing the glass half full than I do, although I’ll keep trying to see beyond (through?) the thinness of the season. Did snow yesterday, much to my delight…

  3. Yes, November can have its dreary days, especially farther north. But I’m glad you and Scout can get out and about and enjoy the fresh air. Lovely photos here, pc, thank you.

    1. Thanks, Jet! I’m working on reducing my complaints about the dreary – slow progress, haha, but as you and Scout know, there’s plenty to enjoy even in the tougher months…

  5. I’m with Scout, those gray days on the rocks and beach look fabulous!! I would love to join you in the November blahs, but I’m in the midst of a middle age moment where I’m finding it incredibly difficult to believe or accept another year is almost over. With our blue skies and warmer temps, I’m fine with pretending it’s spring again and wondering why someone hasn’t taken down the Christmas tree. Enjoyed watching Canada score it’s first World Cup goal, it almost made me forget about Kane’s missed goal for a moment. Enjoy the week and hopefully a road trip in search of snow!🙂

    1. You and Scout have got it right – it’s not so bad, even in the grey… I’ll happily skip November most years, even with the accelerating pace of ever more senior years passing far too quickly! December tomorrow!
      So, England continue the up, down, up pattern – need to break that before Senegal! And US going strong. It’s been a different competition, and maybe there’ll be a different winner this time? Or Spain or Brazil again!
      We’ve had snow yesterday and today, so didn’t have to go too far to find it!
