Another year older, another year wider, and that’s how it goes! So said a friend the other day, wishing me a happy birthday. Wider? I think it was a typo?
Exiting mince pie season, in need of a longer walk, and with a couple of library books due, I decided to return them to my favourite library located over the river and down in Memorial Park. There are two closer libraries, but being a year wider was on my mind.
I like the walk down to Memorial Park as it includes two bridges over the Bow, one each end of Prince’s Island Park, making for a pleasant circular stroll.
The recent mists had finally lifted, and what a sight they left behind! The mist, snowy drizzle and frost (snizzle? smozzle? frizzle? I think these are meteorological words?) had combined to cover everything in a layer of brilliant white.
It seemed like the world had turned silver and blue, with ice extending from the river banks, some piled up in floes, and the lagoon perfectly frozen for skating.
What a splendid winter walk! I returned the books – no overdue notices – enjoyed a moment watching the skaters, and then bounced home over the wobbly bridge.
Once home, being a year older and wiser, I did the sensible thing and warmed up with a cup of strong black coffee and the last slice of Basque cheesecake. Older and wider takes commitment.

PS Barely more than a week into the new year, and, news wise, it’s dreadful, hard to ignore, and shouldn’t be ignored. I’m not going to comment any more than that on that – you’ve seen what’s happening, it’s quite clear – and I’ll stick with trying to keep this little corner a pleasant place to be. Happy belated birthday!! I hope it was an amazing day. Did you get any new exciting books at the library? During my last trip to the library a couple days ago I found an interesting book I have never heard of, that I am reading today “Into the forest”. It says on the back that it is also a movie. I have not seen it, yet.

I’ve borrowed “Ridgeline” by Michael Punke, author of “The Revenant” – I enjoyed that movie, over the top as it was, mostly because it was filmed near here! I’ve not read anything by Punke before, so I’ll let you know…

I never stopped chuckling, PC, as I read. Love the “wider” or “wiser” conundrum. I think you must be wiser to have a sense of humor about the word question. I also loved walking with you to return the library books, finding this beautiful albeit frigid landscape, the bridge and skaters on the canals and enchanting winter scenes. Thanks, Jet! Yes, frigid it was – but we now have a chinook blowing for a few days, so that will eat up the snow… lots of Calgarians love the chinooks, but I’m hoping it stops soon and the snow returns! Ever the contrarian!

What next? A big thaw and hip waders? I love the blue of the river and sky. I am wondering if this is hoar frost or rim ice? Good for you getting out on that long walk!

Thanks, Jane! Whatever it was, we won’t be seeing anything cold or frozen for a while – unpleasantly warm, with a chinook wind! I think you might be right about needing hip waders…

Happy Birthday, Adam! You’re funny…older and wider..I can relate, but I’m sure we are wiser, too. 🙂 Your snowy scenes are so beautiful and peaceful and a perfect journey to the library. Love them all and you make me miss the beauty of snow. Stay cozy! 🙂
