We’ve just got back to Calgary, and you know how it is in the big city compared to living in more isolated locations. Yes, big city life and all the conveniences, like reliable internet, functioning remotes to parkade doors, no lineups in supermarkets due to a high level of staffing, and happy, happy people. (Apparently, I’ve forgotten how to drive, at least that’s what fellow urban road users appear to think. Maybe that chap in the shiny red pickup was waving a fond hello?) All invisible modern problems, but my goodness, being back in the city might have raised my resting heart rate just a touch.
As I’m in cheerful rant mode, I’ll continue. I’m writing this on my phone out and about, and since the paragraph above took about 3 hours, and I can barely read the screen, this will have to be brief. Please excuse any typos, but no need to excuse the incoherence – it’s all good, and I’m quite enjoying myself.
Hopefully, the photos I’ve included are reasonable – again, it’s hard to see when viewing on the small screen, at least for my tired old eyes. Plus, I’m on high alert due to being in an urban setting full of fashionable young people, and I’m sure they’re all looking at me, wondering what he’s doing, sitting in the corner and muttering at his phone. Have I mentioned my inner city induced paranoia? (Calm down, PlaidCamper, you’re in Calgary, not exactly high on any list of no go areas!)
I’m going to have to stop now, this is too exhausting and I might have outstayed my welcome in this cafe – how long can one cup of coffee last before having to order another? I will quickly mention we enjoyed our road trip from Ucluelet to Calgary, and it was very pleasant to be driving through big mountain spaces. We’re planning a weekend in Canmore soon, a favourite mountain town, so I will write about that in the near future, once a sense of calm and the internet at home have been restored. Might need to decaffeinate as well…

Ugh the city, sometimes that is how I feel about the nearby town that I shop in, a mere population of 12,000 and it keeps growing! Recently we spent 4 days in an isolated area (Lassen Volcanic Park) even the tourists drove nice and slow because I think that being do concentrated on nature, it is a natural instinct. Thanks, Margaret! It’s been a bit of an adjustment being back in the city, but I think I’m getting the hang of it! Just as I do, I’ll be heading back to the coast for some peace and quiet (and for work!)

Like the clear shots at the docks while still enveloped by fog. Scout always makes a good model as well. I don’t know, assume it is bark, but looks like a discarded snakeskin.

Thanks, Jane! My favourite view in Ucluelet is when there’s a touch of fog over the bay but it’s still clear on the near side. As for Scout, she’s a bit calmer these days and seems happy to have her picture taken. She probably would chew on old snakeskin if she found some…

Loved the big city humor, foggy harbor photo and the beer appears to be a perfect choice for being back in the city! Wonderful to read everyone is waving a happy hello to you on your return and you might need to increase trips to the brewpubs instead of coffee shops to help lessen the caffeine and reduce the paranoia (now thanks to one word, paranoia, I have the lyrics to Destroyer by The Kinks playing nonstop in my head)! We were trapped in a parking garage in Detroit once and thankfully we found a person to open the gates before we had to make a daring exit. Luckily there are wonderful thoughts of beach walks with Scout and great beer at the new brewery (opening December???) to help you through big city life!! Hope you guys are having a wonderful trip!

Being trapped in a parking garage in Detroit should be the start of a story, or a movie, with a dark and comic tone.
The new brewery is scheduled for the fall, so your suggestion it’ll be December is probably about right!
We’re adjusting to the city, but I’m not trying too hard as the coast – and work – beckons in September. There was heavy snow in Calgary a few Septembers back, and it made for a strange return to school. No chance of that back in Ucluelet!

Thanks, Kelly! Just letting off a little steam, and perhaps being a bit unfair – Calgary is a pretty nice city as cities go, certainly easier to be in than other places we’ve lived. That said, I’ll be happy enough to head back to the coast!

Thanks, Miriam! My adjustment and recovery is temporary – I need to function here for another week or so and then head back. Calgary can breathe a sigh of relief that the old curmudgeon has moved on!
Hats off that you can compose and post on a phone, you must have excellent eyesight and/or a great optician. And patience!

Hope you’re reconnected fully by now & well-adjusted to those “invisible modern problems.” I know how they go, having just spent another 5 days in & around Providence, with a lovely retreat to Block Island, similar in a way to your own return to Ucluelet & its wonderful brewery & coastal ambience.
