Abandoned

Abandoned was the word that came to mind when I saw this little boat sitting all alone on the mudflats. Is this the prompt for a “feeling sorry for himself” PlaidCamper rant? A quiet one, of course, being an introvert and all that…

All alone, but not actually abandoned

No! Keep reading if you’re still here, there’s no rant or feeling sorry for oneself. Or do stop reading if you were hoping for a rambling rant. We’ve enjoyed another calm week, not too fast, not too slow, and certainly not too many people, even though travel restrictions are starting to lift. Our lifeboat isn’t crowded.

Last Sunday we wandered down to our favourite little shell beach, and although the tide was high, it was calm and there was dry space enough to make it worth the clamber down to sit for an hour, enjoy the quiet.

A touch woody? I’d rather share your pastry…

We heard bald eagles in the trees above and behind us, and peered and craned to catch a glimpse, but they were out of sight. Well alright, it was enough to know they were there, so we settled back against a log and poured the all important second cup of caffeine. Maybe there was a pastry to go with it, or most of a pastry after Scout tried to snag her share.

Any of those pastries left?

Later in the day we went down to the outer harbour, to look at the boats and do some more sitting. We’re getting quite accomplished at it, and the lapping of small waves against the dock, and waving to the small craft sailors made for a pleasant late afternoon. We couldn’t sit there into the evening, although that would have been good. No, we had an important appointment to keep.

Keeping busy…

Sunday evening appointments? Sounds unnecessarily busy PlaidCamper – what was it? Good question, and I’m glad you asked! We had to meet up with the new cans of Ucluelet Brewing Company Kolsch. Yes, on a Sunday, but not a school night due to a few days off. I wouldn’t abandon my no drinking on a school night principle. Actually, I would, but didn’t this time.

…but not too busy. An abandoned principle? No!

I’ll leave you now, keeping with the non-existent abandoned theme, and wish you a wonderful weekend ahead!

I am a would be outdoorsman - that is if I had more time, skills and knowledge. When I can, I love being outdoors, just camping, hiking, snowboarding, xc skiing, snowshoeing, paddling a canoe or trying something new. What I lack in ability, I make up for in enthusiasm and having a go. I'd never really survive for long out there in the wild, but I enjoy pretending I could if I had to...

  1. The boat may not be abandoned here, but I get the sense that something else might be, at least temporarily– like worry & the world of busy-ness… Way to do it, PC, Kolsch & all!

  2. I like the shot of Scout licking her lips and your boots at water’s edge. Oh, I so want to be around water this week, the kind you can swim and sit in without algae and parasite warnings. We are entering a heat wave up to 37 and my fridge is stocked with water and ice cubes. I think it is hotter where you are. Stay cool.

    1. Thanks, Jane! It is unbelievably hot here right now, not at all usual, and no breeze to cool things down either. Taking it very slow. Yup, ice cubes and shade is what we’re doing. And maybe a beer later…
      Stay well!

  3. You had me chuckling and tittering throughout your non-rant, pc, it was great fun. Enjoyed your accomplished ability at sitting and your important meeting. And how lovely for you three to have a relaxed and pleasant outing. Also enjoyed all the shells on that beach. wow. Great fun, my friend, thanks for taking us along.

    1. Thanks, Jet! We love that little shell beach, but it’s been too hot to head down there this weekend – high temperatures and no sea breeze, which is unusual for here. Instead, we’ve been having important meetings in the shade as the sun goes down. We hope your weekend is going well!

  4. Absolutely loved your abandoned boat photo and that you’re keeping busy and sharing your pastries with Scout!!🐾🙂 I was actually hoping for a little bit of a rant, but I can see how a visit to the local brewery and watching the boats could change the mood. What a week, the Tour de France, England defeating Germany to join Denmark in the next round and having a great team to cheer for in the Stanley Cup Final – Happy Canada Day!!🙂

    1. Thank you! Go Canadiens! A bit unexpected, but let’s see what happens…
England defeating Germany? Hasn’t happened in a while, but hopes are high(ish!)
Too hot this weekend to rant, in fact we’re wilting in the heat, and having to cool off with a local brew or two. Or three – it’s that warm!
I hope your weekend is going well!

  5. I’ve been enjoying some Kolsch myself lately, of the ruby red grapefruity variety. Every time I take a sip, I think of Sublime: “Summertime, and the livin’s easy…”
