Suspended – a tale of canine courage

Suspended? The blog? No, more of a brief blogging pause as we spend the next week or two with less certain internet availability. But before that, here’s a wobbly one featuring a brave dog:

Free wobbles top right

On a recent very warm morning we visited Parc des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière in search of some shade. There is a waterfall that’s used to generate electricity, and you can take great photos of the falls from a suspension bridge traversing the Chaudière River. You’ll need to be brave though…

Looks sturdy enough

A few steps in and we were aware of a slight bouncing sensation underfoot. A few more strides and the bouncing became quite pronounced. Scout stopped dead in her tracks and for a few moments it looked like she wouldn’t go forward or back. Hmm. Then Mrs. PC strode past and Scout clearly didn’t like the idea of not being in front, so off we wobbled at quite a pace. None of us wanted to spend too long on the bridge…

More power to you

The views were great, mostly snatched glances from the bridge (we were not stopping, oh no) and the views are as good from just off the bridge – firmer footing and a more relaxed canine companion. We did find some leafy shade, and spent a few moments enjoying relief from the sun and pretending our heart rates were running at normal. We knew there was a return trip over the bridge but didn’t tell Scout.

Leafy

As it turned out, Scout being Scout, the return over the bridge was not a problem. She shrugged, put one paw in front of the other, and without looking down (I did – not a good idea – my stomach lurched) trotted across as fast as her legs would carry her. Pretty fast, I can tell you!

Is that all? Pah!

If you have sturdy legs and a bold disposition, then a trip to the bridge and the falls is recommended.

Sturdy and bold? I’m in!

Thanks for reading and we’ll leave it there for this week, with pulses steady and our little wobble behind us! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

If we have reliable wifi, we’ll aim to post something next week!

Can I come out now? Has he finished talking about the bridge?

I am a would be outdoorsman - that is if I had more time, skills and knowledge. When I can, I love being outdoors, just camping, hiking, snowboarding, xc skiing, snowshoeing, paddling a canoe or trying something new. What I lack in ability, I make up for in enthusiasm and having a go. I'd never really survive for long out there in the wild, but I enjoy pretending I could if I had to...

  1. I’m glad you shared the wonderful photos, since there would be no talking Harper and me into ever walking across the suspension bridge!! Thankfully Mrs. PC was able to get Scout moving since it probably wouldn’t be easy for you to bounce along carrying Scout across!! Harper freezes like Scout and I know one of these days I’m going to trip right over her and that’s just one of the reasons we could never do the bridge. Our warm temperatures return this week and shade will be a priority. Love that last photo of Scout and after that adventure, Scout may be hoping for a little rain so she can stay inside watching movies. Enjoy another fabulous week of wandering!!🐾😎

    1. Thank you! I know for a fact I could only carry Scout a few steps before collapse… my thoughts are she knows this and decided she’s best off moving herself along! I’ve been across a few suspension bridges on foot, and this seemed particularly springy. I don’t think about it and just head across, trying not to recall movies with rope bridge sequences…
It’s been increasingly hot as the week has gone on, but thundery showers will break the heat over the coming weekend.
I hope you’ve had plenty of shade and some good books!

  2. I did cross the suspension bridge near Wayne, Alberta. Not too high but I was scared. The young people were just jumping on it(stomach lurch) but I got across, probably like Scout. I saw a cute video on You Tube where a woman and her Golden Retriever approached an escalator. The dog balked so she carried it. So cute! Enjoy your stay!

    1. I don’t mind the wobbly bridges, but I’d never deliberately bounce on one! And Scout knows I can’t carry her far, so off she has to trot!
Thanks, Jane, and I hope your week is going well!

  3. Yeah, I’m not a fan of suspension bridges either, pc. But holy-moly what a lot of beauty you three enjoyed from there. I’m glad you all pushed forward one foot or paw in front of the other, and provided us with this picturesque view. Have fun on your adventure this week, I hope you have a grand time. I loved the caption, “More power to you.”
