Spring paws

Oops, I mean pause… Anyway, here’s Scout enjoying an almost warm and sunny spring morning earlier this week:

Sunny ways!

She, like us, was surprised late Saturday and through Sunday, when just as we were finished organizing our spring camping plans, the snow began to fall. And fall. And fall! Not too sure of the final amounts, but it was close to a record for a March snowfall in Quebec.

“Thought we were done with this?!”

It was certainly pretty, although it might have been the wettest and heaviest snow I’ve ever shovelled. More like weighty sorbet rather than light fluff. Temperatures have climbed since the weekend, so when we were enjoying the fruits of my snow shoveling labour by sitting on the cleared and sunny deck, the noisiest sounds were those of running and dripping water as the sorbet defrosted.

“Good job, old boy – but have you missed a bit?”

We took a walk out around the neighborhood once the storm passed, and it looked more like mid-January than it did back in mid-January:

Looks like January, but feels much warmer!

The snow was too claggy for us to walk on or through to access the woods, so we made do with looking at the edges. Pretty enough:

Access denied!

After all our exertions, we went home and enjoyed a well earned glass of something good!

Splendid – spring notes of pine resin, and not too bitter – yum!

The next week or two looks set to follow a similar pattern, with another small spring forward and hints of warmth, followed by a drop in temperatures and more snow. Is it jumper or jacket, or both?!

Both!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I am a would be outdoorsman - that is if I had more time, skills and knowledge. When I can, I love being outdoors, just camping, hiking, snowboarding, xc skiing, snowshoeing, paddling a canoe or trying something new. What I lack in ability, I make up for in enthusiasm and having a go. I'd never really survive for long out there in the wild, but I enjoy pretending I could if I had to...

  1. I like all the ways you describe the snow here, pc. How exciting it must’ve been for a snow-loving family like yours, to get another downfall. It certainly is beautiful. That is A LOT of snow! And I am impressed by all the shoveling you did on your beautiful new deck, clearly Scout is too. Happy weekend to you.

  2. Looks like you had a more enjoyable weather weekend than we did in western NY. Here, a mere trace of snow with strong uncomfortable winds. And I like the way you topped off an outing with an ale infused with a note of pine. Sounds tasty! Like a prelude to the crazy warm spring-like days that followed.

    1. Yup, and it keeps on coming! More snow and spring is not showing up any time soon! We do genuinely enjoy getting out in the snow, so all good here.
Thanks, Miriam, and I hope you’re having a great week!

  3. This much snow is pretty, so I guess it will be snowy paws for a short time. The spring sun is very warm, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes to melt, then oh, muddy paws! I was having trouble imagining the taste of pine resin, hmmm. I had my own form of brew yesterday, a saskatoon lemonade soda. It was a tasty fruity flavour with a touch of citrus. Very enjoyable. Have a good week!

    1. That soda sounds good, Jane – a fine sunny day drink! We are up and down here with snow – so much snow! – and then a mini thaw, then more snow. I think spring is out there somewhere?
I hope your week is going well!

  4. You do have lots of snow! Winter used to be my favourite season growing up in the mountains. My friends and I had a goal of skiing/snowboarding a minimum of 100 days/year, perhaps that was what made winter so much fun?

  5. Looks like Life is Good for Scout on that gorgeous snow-free deck!! That is too much snow in the midst of camping planning and I was really beginning to believe it was May. Lovely neighborhood and snow covered homes and trails, but be careful with that heavy snow…we wouldn’t want you to have two bad wrists and drinking your Guinness or fancy beer with a straw. I refuse to acknowledge our change in weather, but the leprechauns might have been running around in the snow yesterday. Hope you have a wonderful week and the snow melts by camping season!😎

    1. Thank you! That clear and sunny deck? Nope, not any more. So much snow the last 24 hours! Looks like winter again, again… Good job Scout is part husky!
Managed to hoist a pint or two of Guinness, so clearly no long term damage – phew! Leprechauns in the garden you say? The Guinness was flowing where you live…
I hope your week is going well!
